Согласно древним жизнеописаниям Будды Майя, мать «наставника богов и людей», умерла на седьмой день после рождения сына. В данной статье речь пойдет о том, как авторы буддийских текстов пытались объяснить это печальное событие, и о том, что связывает этот эпизод с некоторыми типовыми сюжетами и персонажами древнеиндийского эпоса и брахманической литературы.

According to ancient Buddhist hagiographic texts, Buddha's mother Maya died on the seventh day after his birth. In this paper I will show how did ancient Buddhist authors attempt to justify this sorrowful event. Besides I will try to find out if there is any connection between this episode of the Buddhist legend and some typical stories and characters from ancient Indian epic and brahmanic literature.
