<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article is devoted to a little-known historical poem on the Third Crusade (‘Le Pas Saladin’). This literary work, which was very popular during the Middle Ages, is considered to be based on true facts concerning the history of the Battle of Jaffa (1192). The aim of the article is to place the poem in a broader context, in order to see how, within the text of the ‘Pas Saladin’, history devolves into legend and how actual events are deliberately distorted and reinterpreted by an unknown narrator. The author of the article admits that the process of reconsidering the history of the famous battle could be related to the European search for political and national identity.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Третий крестовый поход</kwd><kwd>рыцарство</kwd><kwd>Ричард Львиное Сердце</kwd><kwd>Филипп II Август</kwd><kwd>Саладин</kwd><kwd>“Le Pas Saladin”</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>The Third Crusade</kwd><kwd>chivalry</kwd><kwd>Richard The Lion Heart</kwd><kwd>Philip II Augustus</kwd><kwd>Saladin</kwd><kwd>“Le Pas Saladin”</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Le Clerc 1856 – Le Clerc V.
