Статья посвящена истории изучения и интерпретации древнеримской надписи из города Киус, созданной во время войны императора Валента с готами (конец 360-х гг. н.э.). От памятника сохранилась только правая сторона. Относительно содержания утраченной части было высказано немало предположений. Исключительный авторитет сохраняет реконструкция Киусской надписи, выдвинутая в 1882 г. Т. Моммзеном. В начале XX в. ряд ученых предложили ее видоизменить и модернизировать, но эти предложения до сих до сих пор не получили безоговорочного признания. В статье выдвигаются аргументы в поддержку предложенных изменений моммзеновской редакции; их предлагается сделать еще более радикальными. Завершается работа призывом к румынским археологам найти найти недостающую часть памятника.

The paper deals with the history of reconstruction and interpretation of Cius’ inscription (CIL III 7494 = ILS 770). It was created during the war conducted by roman emperor Valens against Goths in 367-369. Only a half of text has remained, and so a number of hypotheses have been advanced to reconstruct the lost part. Reconstruction proposed by Theodor Mommsen in 1882 enjoys high prestige to this day. Although some efforts to rewrite it were attempted (supported e.g. by H. Dessau), they didn’t gain general acceptance. The author suggests new arguments for rewriting of Mommsens reconstruction.
