Abstract
The article discusses the controversy between two outstanding representatives of Russian modernism on the article of Vladimir Solovyov, published in the journal “Questions of Philosophy and Psychology” (№ 40). In the history of modernism, this is perhaps the earliest polemic about the essence of the “I” as the frst principle in the constitution of being. This issue will be discussed especially actively in the journal “Questions of Life” (1905). In the polemics of 1898 between Valery Bryusov and Mikhail Samygin, the most difcult questions of the self-determination of early modernism are seen.
