Abstract

The article considers the category of “public interest” and its implications for media freedom. Analyzed international norms on ensuring a fair balance of freedom of expression and privacy protection as an equivalent legal values are analyzed. By example of a particular court case it shows that the existing in Russian legislation and in judgements of the RF Supreme Court gap in the definition of “public person” as a subject of public interest leads to judicial decisions that are contrary to international norms.
