Abstract

This article is focused on the historical and geographical book named “Description of the Selected Villages” (“T’aengniji”, 1751) written in the 18th century by Yi Chung-hwan (1690-1756?), a scholar who spent more than 30 years in the exile. In “T’aengniji” he shared his knowledge of the eight Korean provinces: their history, geography, trade, people and traditions. Till the beginning of the XX century the book had been widely read in hand-copied versions. Nowadays more than 40 different hand-copied manuscripts are preserved in public and university libraries in South Korea. This article explores two manuscripts which are held in Yonsei University Library, where in summer 2014 the author of the article did the field research.
