Abstract

The article based on archival materials deals with the history of the controversy about the “purity of a language” deployed in 1939 on the pages of “Literaturnaya Gazeta” between writer F. Gladkov and philologist D. Ushakov. The author reveals the ideological subtext of the discussion about orthoepy, analyses the essence of the mask of “man of the people” used by F. Gladkov and demonstrates the validity of antipurist position of D. Ushakov.
