Abstract

The article describes the history of the most famous philosophical fragment of V. Grossman’s novel “Life and Fate” – Ikonnikov’s treatise about the good and human kindness. Based on archival materials, the author concludes that Ikonnikov’s essay was initially to have been part of the novel “For The Just Cause”, translated into English as “Stalingrad”, but was left out during the editorial assessment in the “Novy Mir” journal. Later, however, the piece was included in the continuation of “For The Just Cause” – the novel “Life and Fate”. Thereat, the system of publicistic ideas was significantly changed.
